The following are the Minimum Requirements that must be in place before the office can go paperless.
Software:
Operating System and Network

Integration vs. Bridging

June 21, 2011

All the patient information: chart notes, radiographs, probings, correspondence, photographs and all the rest should be linked to the patient chart. This can be accomplished in two ways; integration or bridging.
Integration: If the data and radiographs are integrated as part of the digital patient record that usually means that the radiographic application is made by [...]

The File Room of 2021

June 3, 2011

Today: The dentist has a room filled with charts, radiographs, correspondence, EOBs and all the other records along with endless little white boxes filled with plaster models. Finding the models and records for a case done six years ago requires an exploratory party and soon bears a striking resemblance to a wilderness expedition. But make no mistake about [...]

Common Mistake

May 25, 2011

One of the mistakes dentists make with digital charting is they only go part way. For example: They use a paper chart in the treatment room during diagnosis to mark future treatment. Then they take the paper chart to the computer and enter everything again. They will use the computer to create an estimate, insurance [...]

eFax

May 18, 2011

One would think that e-mail, FTP, instant messaging, and other methods of transferring files would have killed the fax machine, but the antiquated tool is still alive and kicking, especially in the business sector. Fortunately, you no longer need a dedicated fax machine (and the associated phone line and ink) to send and receive paperwork. [...]

May 12, 2011

I mentioned in a previous article that one of the features I liked about YAPI was the Huddle or Morning Meeting.
The Huddle feature pulls all the daily appointments from your Practice Management System (Dentrix, Eaglesoft, etc.) and displays them in order with pertinent information such as when they are scheduled, how long, what is planned, [...]

Too Many Goals = No Goals at All

April 28, 2011

More from Marcus Buckingham:
If you overwhelm your people with tons of goals, or many sub-goals, you run the risk of them trying to do everything in a superficial or inadequate way. Instead, try to create total clarity around a few — probably 4-6 a quarter is about right.
What is true about goals in general is also true [...]

Paperless Records Tip

April 27, 2011

Insurance CDT codes are set up by procedure and are designed primarily to track fees. However, in real life in the dental office we work on appointments not just codes. Many procedures require multiple appointments to complete. For example a traditional crown (not CAD CAM) includes a preparation and then a delivery. A denture requires impressions [...]

Digital Workflow

April 18, 2011

The internet means that many time-consuming forms of white-collar drudgery have disappeared,
The quote comes from the Seth Godin blog linked below. I thought it was important because it reflects a truth that is often lost or misunderstood. Technology, good technology, frees us from mundane busy work jobs and allows us more time for relationships and [...]

March 20, 2011

My local newspaper the AZ Republic has a lengthy Sunday Business article on the use of digital records in medicine. The article addresses the usual issues we face in dentistry in a lay friendly manner. Such as cost, efficiency, security , privacy, and acceptance by reluctant users.

X-Ray Scanner

March 4, 2011

Seen at Chicago Midwinter
I am often asked to recommend a scanner for radiographs. In my opinion it is not necessary to use a special X-Ray Specific scanner. Any old desktop scanner will do as long as it has a transparency adaptor. This is a device that shines light through the item to be scanned and [...]
