The modern smartphone is a real world version of the communicator of Star Trek fame. In fact smart phones actually do more than communicators.
The linked article discusses a molecular scanner that can be attached to a smartphone to do everything from checking the freshness of tomatoes to determining your BMI. This is not a sometime in the future vaporware product but is available right now for around $435.
