i-Pad and the Evil Empire

Click through to this article by Cory Doctorow. On the surface it is about i-Pad but there is a whole lot more there. A whole lot that relates to technology in dentistry. Incumbents in dentistry have erected all kinds of barriers to keep users in and keep new comers out. As long as consumers…that’s us…are content to allow that we will be offered limited options.

Doctorow gives an example:  “Apple’s customers can’t take their “iContent” with them to competing devices, and Apple developers can’t sell on their own terms.”  In dentistry a customer of ABC digital radiography can not take their content to a competing XYZ system. And the ABC company is actively hostile to any product attempting to interact with them.

Relying on incumbents to produce your revolutions is not a good strategy. They’re apt to take all the stuff that makes their products great and try to use technology to charge you extra for it, or prohibit it altogether.
