Research shows that healthcare providers who practice clinical skills via simulation have better patient outcomes than those who dont. The Virtual Dental Implant Training Simulation is designed to help students in diagnostics, decision making and treatment protocols.
From Andrew: Interesting that the label is “game” as opposed to the more familiar “simulator” but it is an appropriate one. The cognitive merits of video games are that they are, ultimately, problems to be solved, and the training program described in this article is more about making the correct diagnosis and treatment decisions and not about physical skills, such a being able to handle a drill correctly.
Which is good because, at this point in time, a simulator that used something like a Wii controller to simulate using a drill or scraping plaque off a tooth is not, in fact going to replace the real thing, but a game that teaches to how to problem solve in scenarios that dentist commonly face can be incredibly valuable.
