Of course the loss of human life is the biggest tragedy followed by the destruction of so much. However as this article explains there will be far reaching effects we can only guess at.

No silicon = no chips, and so it goes down the manufacturing pipeline…Japan has become the primary source; in several cases the only source for many of the critical building blocks of modern technology.
