MySpace and Facebook have over 200 million members each. Other well know sites include Flikr, a photo sharing site, Meetup a site to plan offline meetings, Linkedin for business and the newest phenom Twitter a “Micro-blogging” site with six million users.

To appreciate what this has to do with dentistry think water cooler and back fence. The traditional approach to building a strong dental practice has been word of mouth and personal referrals. When someone refers a friend, relative or co-worker with a heartfelt personal recommendation that person comes to the office highly motivated to join the practice and accept the advice of the new dentist. In the past these strong personal recommendations took place in limited face to face meetings at the water cooler or over the back fence. Social networks and social media allow people to connect much faster and to a much larger group of people
