These sorts of reviews plague the whole system. From my understanding, Yelp weeds out positive reviews it suspects come from the owner while letting these grudge reviews stay online because they can be used as leverage to get an advertising deal

The linked article by John Dvorak is more of a listing of all the bad things about Yelp including the prevalence of “grudge” ratings. His suggestion is to go to a simple yes or no rating, thumbs up or thumbs down. I do not think that will really help.

However it is important to be aware of the power of online ratings, be aware of your personal ratings and that the system according to Dvorak has “a corrupt business model”.

The good news is that more people are recognizing that it is corrupt and are taking them less seriously. However there is still a long way to go to create an accurate, useful and fair system.
