Wait until all the facts are in…

“Im just going to wait until all the facts are in…”All the facts are never in. We dont have all the facts on the sinking of the Titanic, on the efficacy of social media or on whether dogs make good house pets…The real question isnt whether you have all the facts. The real question is, “do I know enough to make a useful decision?” and no decision is still a decision.

Dentists by nature are cautious fact based folks. As a general rule that is a good thing when it comes to providing scientifically valid dental care. However it can also lead to the paralysis of analysis when it comes to making business decisions.

There comes a point where “waiting ‘till all the facts are in” becomes an excuse for not doing anything. And as Godin points out above doing nothing is a decision.

This is especially true when it comes to purchasing and implementing new technology. Or anything we do not fully understand. All the facts are never in, sometimes you just have to move ahead with the best option. Or, if as is often the case, if the best option is not apparent then choose one of the best.

For example; digital radiography. There are still dentists agonizing over whether to buy and then what to buy. What if they make a mistake?!!!

There may be no absolute clear best option however almost every dentist will be OK if he/she chooses one of the top three products, Schick, Dexis or Carestream (Kodak). Each of these has tens of thousands of users and has been in the market for close to twenty years. Just do it.
