Dentists and Patients Disagree

A 2015 study in the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry found that dentists and patients evaluating the same smile saw things quite differently.

Essentially the dentists were more attuned to esthetics than the patients. I have been astounded at what some patients think is an attractive smile. I especially remember one fellow who was very proud of his discount veneer job that had all the esthetic appeal and nuance of white cardboard. I imagine he was most proud of the fact that he paid so little for it. Interestingly dental students with the least experience were the harshest critics.

This is where cameras and digital photos can be such a wonderful tool. The dentist and patient can easily see theĀ teeth and the smileĀ and agree on what is an issue and what outcomes they expect.
