Guide for Making High Quality Smart Phone Videos

From my friends at TNT Dental. Video can be a powerful tool. Unfortunately many DIY dental videos I see are just bad. These tips are simple and will help you avoid most amateur mistakes.

TNT recommends you make a short (30 second) video for patients to view before the first visit returning from the pandemic shutdown. You can put this video on your web page, social media accounts or send it as an e-blast.

Dentists and Patients Disagree

A 2015 study in the International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry found that dentists and patients evaluating the same smile saw things quite differently.

Essentially the dentists were more attuned to esthetics than the patients. I have been astounded at what some patients think is an attractive smile. I especially remember one fellow who was very proud of his discount veneer job that had all the esthetic appeal and nuance of white cardboard. I imagine he was most proud of the fact that he paid so little for it. Interestingly dental students with the least experience were the harshest critics.

This is where cameras and digital photos can be such a wonderful tool. The dentist and patient can easily see the teeth and the smile and agree on what is an issue and what outcomes they expect.

Make the Lab Techs Day!

SmileCA local lab manager  mentioned this idea to me, which once you think about it is so obvious yet I have rarely done it. When you finish a great restorative case…send a copy of the after photo to the lab. The technicians will appreciate seeing their careful work delivered into the mouth of a real human being.

Personally I imagine most people (even dental lab technicians :-)) will get more professional satisfaction from seeing the result in someone’s mouth and to hear how happy the person is with the results than they will from simply treating a plaster model.

You can make this even more effective if you include a before along with the after photo.

I just talked to the developers of this new service. I like a lot of the things they are doing. I am a huge fan of Teledentistry. At this time it is rather basic and is mostly a marketing rather than a diagnostic tool. Nevertheless it is a good start and a creative way to leverage the ubiquitous use of smart phones, increase the power of your web page and differentiate yourself from the competition.

New LED Ring Light with Blue tooth hand control for Smart Phones

I love this:

Dine’s new Smart LED Ring Light properly illuminates the close up subject, turning your smart phone into a dental/medical camera. The LED Ring light provides full shadowless illumination inside the mouth for dental photography,  inside the surgical cavity as well as providing accurate color and illumination for cosmetic/plastic surgery, dermatology and ophthalmology.

Two issues. First be cautious when using your smart phone for patient photos. Be sure the auto save to the cloud feature is turned off. iCloud and the others are not HIPAA compliant.

Second is the price. $349. You can practically buy a phone for that price. You can find snap on consumer “Selfie Lights” for less than $20. I know everything “dental” costs more and I am also sure the Dine light is better than the $20 version  but is is 18 times better?

Photos and Digital Charting

If you get a good set of intraoral digital photos and x-rays you can do much of the charting at your desk. You no longer need to be chairside with the assistant calling out findings while she scribbles things down on paper. This is especially true with existing restorations, broken teeth and other conditions. You can also make a treatment plan from the digital photos and x-rays.

If you have a good set of intraoral photos you could even use them as your existing record rather than trying to put it on the paper chart.

If you ever are challenged in court your photos of before after and even during treatment will be the best documentation you can ask for.

We should develop clinical protocols to include photos on every new patient just as we take radiographs on every patient.

Dentrix Smart Image is Here

From Dentrix Magazine:

Smart Image makes it easy for you to access more patient information quickly through a seamless integration without searching through separate software for a history of patient images. So, what imaging software do you use? Sopro by Acteon? Romexis by Planmeca? Sidexis 4 by Dentsply Sirona? Chances are that you may even use a combination of these tools as you capture 2D and 3D images. The good news is that the opportunity now exists for any of these vendors to integrate. We already have working integrations with several vendors, and we will be building more of these connections over the coming months. Please check out our Smart Image webpage, www.dentrix.com/smartimage, to see the status of the connectors that are being built, and to learn more about Smart Image.

Smart Image is NOT a new imaging software. It is a new bridge and integration tool that allows Dentrix users to bring images from various 3rd party image applications into Dentrix.

When you acquire diagnostic images, Smart Image automatically associates them with the correct CDT codes for accurate billing, and displays them in the patient chart. Now the patient’s 2D and 3D images can be accessed without leaving Dentrix.

LOVE this. However be cautious with the use of your smart phone for patient pics. Do NOT allow the images to be automatically uploaded to i-Cloud etc. as that could be a HIPAA violation.

Dentrix Smart Image

Dentrix G7 and Dentrix Smart Image are the first products launched by Henry Schein One, the company formed by Henry Schein and Internet Brands to deliver better integrated software solutions for dentists. Dentrix Smart Image allows practitioners to access 2D, 3D and CAD/CAM images from the Dentrix Chart, while linking images with CDT codes that are posted to both the ledger and the patients’ continuing care record automatically. This not only saves the dentists time, but ensures they receive payment for all the procedures performed.

Dine Digital Solution

From Dinecorp.com:

The camera lights to the back of the mouth with NO additional attachments Our fastest focusing hand held camera ever!! Greatest depth of field of any of the Dine Digital Solutions. Ever wanted to get away from using the bulky Single Lens Reflex systems? Introducing….The Dine Digital Solution

Source: Dine Digital Solution | Dinecorp.com

The camera creates its own WIFI environment, sending images to a Tablet or Smart Phone. This is very convenient however you need to be cautious of security issues. You should not e-mail images unless you have encrypted e-mail. You need to be cautious of sending images to your phone as they are often auto stored to the cloud which creates another HIPAA issue.

Never the less this looks like a great product for dental offices.

IMHO every dental office should take a series of patient images just as we now take radiographs. They are great for treatment planning and provide a superb record for medical legal issues.

Start taking pictures again

Our simplest intra-oral camera ever!! featuring a Dine modified small format digital camera.

The camera weighs under a pound and fits into the palm of almost any hand. The camera is capable of accomplishing the full range of dental photography with ease from the 1:1 extreme close-up of a posterior quadrant to anterior, lateral, and all mirror photos including occlusals and linguals.

Source: Dine Digital Solution | Dinecorp.com

Digital photos are so easy to take and so valuable they should be a standard part of every new patient exam.

Photos are invaluable if you ever need to defend yourself in court.

Photos are great for charting. With a good set of intraoral digital photos and x-rays you can do much of the charting at your desk. You no longer need to be chairside with the assistant calling out findings while she scribbles things down on paper. This is especially true with existing restorations, broken teeth and other conditions. You can also make a treatment plan from the digital photos and x-rays.

It is possible to take patient photos with a smart phone however you need an attachment to provide a flash and depth of field for good intraoral photos. Plus you need to disable the cloud storage feature of your phone in order to protect patient privacy per HIPAA.
