There are three levels of digital high tech diagnosis

Detect: The primary function of a high tech diagnostic is to detect, or help us detect, the presence of a physiological change. The light, the laser or the CMOS sensor must detect a difference between healthy tissue and pathologic tissue and display it is such a way we can see it.

Record: The next step is to record the change. Not every diagnostic device does this but most do with a digital image like a photo or a radiograph. Some just display a digital readout which we must enter in the record ourselves.

Evaluate: A few diagnostic devices will not only detect and record the change they will actually help you determine the extent of disease. For example Diagnodent will give a digital readout. The higher the number the greater the decay. Spectra analyses the color images and based on clinical research gives a probability of decay in the enamel or the dentin.
