This link is to a long essay by Walter Russel Meade on the nature of progress and how industries once thought immune to automation, like higher education, law and medicine are being fundamentally re-shaped by technology. (And those being outsourced are fighting back.) Part politics, part philosophy it is an interesting read for anyone interested in the future.

This is the essence of progress: as we move forward less of our society’s time and energy goes into just staying alive; more of it goes into living better.
