The Information Highway

The Internet has been famously dubbed the “Information Super Highway”. That is a great metaphor with visions of fast cars moving along the highway slipping from one lane to another zipping on and off high speed exits taking information from one place to another.

Getting the super highway to actually work in dentistry requires three things. The information must be created or converted to a digital format. Both the sender and receiver of the data must have the capacity to use digital information. The data must be stored in a form that is usable at both ends of the highway; it can’t be proprietary.

The superhighway works great as long as everyone is driving a fast new car and the road is open. But it breaks down pretty quick when certain cars aren’t allowed or if some people are on skateboards some others are in a horse drawn buggy.
