Broken links can hurt from an SEO perspective because one of the factors that the search engines take into account is the usability of a website. If a search engine spider visits your site and comes to lots of “dead ends”, or broken links, it can cause problems.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of inserting key words, meta tags, special coding and a bucket full of other specific techniques that are designed to increase your website visibility to Google and other search engines. The ultimate goal is to bring your website to the top or at least close to the top of the “organic” search results on page one.

As the article outlines finding and eliminating bad links can improve your SEO. The reason is that Google has one primary mission, to deliver relevant results. If a website has a lot of bad links it indicates a poorly maintained or out of date site that is not relevant.

On the other hand a site that has lots of active links both in and out indicates a relevant site people like and use.

However the most important thing to know about SEO is that there is no secret sauce. That is to say no one can guarantee you a top ranking by manipulating the various aspects of the Google algorithms. In fact if you are caught (and you will be) Google will punish you for attempting to game the system.
