The single most important thing a dentist can do to protect the office from a data breach and a potential HIPAA violation is to encrypt the practice data.

Sesame Communications has launched “a significant data encryption upgrade designed to protect Patient Health Information (PHI) both at rest and in transmission within the Sesame marketing and patient engagement system.”

If your office has a data breach, which according to HIPAA includes a lost thumb drive or burglars stealing your server, you are liable. The only way you can protect yourself is to encrypt the data.
