XP Support Ending

windowsXP_end-of-lifeMicrosoft has announced that they will absolutely positively stop providing support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. Dan Edwards the President of Pact-One had this to say about the end of life for XP.

With support ending for Windows XP, this means that you will no longer be able to download security updates.   You may be asking, why this will be important and that is a great question.  Without security patches it will make it easier for the hackers and other bad people to take advantage of vulnerabilities.   This is a big deal because spyware, Trojans and viruses can create a huge threat to your practice.

It is possible this could lead to data breaches, credit card data loss and HIPAA violations which could have severe financial consequences.

If you are still running XP, and about half of dentists are, you probably installed the XP machine over four years ago. Although it is technically possible to upgrade the operating system from XP to Windows 7 in most cases you will be better off just replacing the machine.

Start planning now. Replace some or all of your machines before year end to take advantage of possible tax write offs and then budget the funds to replace the rest early next year.
