Hand Held X-Rays Goes Anywhere.

nomadI am a big fan of the Nomad hand held x-ray device from Aribex. Interestingly the inventor, Dr. Clark Turner started out looking for a completely portable x-ray unit for use in missionary work. Nomad can be used in mobile clinics, nursing homes, hospital wards, missionary work, and even forensics.

However it is also great for use in a dental office. A single Nomad can take the place of at least three or maybe four wall mounted units. That means not only is it more flexible but overall it costs less.

Nomad Value

There are some great tax reasons to purchase dental equipment NOW before the end of the year. One of my favorites is the Nomad. Watch the video below to see how it works and can save you a bunch of money.

Nomad Benefits

HandHoldingNOMADProWorking2One of my favorite products is the Nomad handheld x-ray machine. The Nomad is obviously economical and flexible but it is not so obviously a great benefit to certain patients. For example, wheelchair patients.

In the past wheelchair bound patients would either have to transfer to the dental chair, which was often very difficult or impossible, or stay in the wheelchair and we would try and take radiographs with limited success. The Nomad allows us to take radiographs anywhere not just in an overcrowded treatment room.

It is also a benefit for young and or anxious patients. The hygienist taking the image stays in the room next to the patient and she/he can reassure and calm the patient resulting in faster results with fewer retakes and happier patients.

If you are building or remodeling a dental office do not install old fashioned wall mounted X-Rays.

Taking X-rays Off the Wall

Nomad 2 hand held dental x-rayIn case you missed it. Here is a Dentalcompare article from March2013 about one of my favorite products – Nomad.

The NOMAD, a hand held x-ray unit from Aribex, looks like a big ray gun from an old sci-fi film. There is a body, a pistol grip and a cone or barrel that emits the x-rays. The operator aims the device and holds it steady while the radiograph is taken. The ability to stay in the room while you take the image and better yet hold the tube eliminates most of the problems we encounter when taking an x-ray…

Back in the day of wall mounted telephones, if you wanted to use the phone in the kitchen and in the living room you needed two phones each mounted and wired in place. And you had to pay for each phone including installation. It is the same with wall mounted x-ray units.

With a hand held unit you only need to buy one and there are no installation costs. You can use NOMAD in the hygiene room for re-call, in the overflow room for emergencies, and in the doctor’s room for root canals. One device takes the place of three or four wall mounted units, making it much more cost effective than the old system

Handheld x-ray units eliminate most of the problems we have with drifting arms and squirmy patients. They are also much more economical than wall mounted units. BUT are they safe? The answer for the Nomad is yes. The unit has been extensively tested and proven to be safe. On the other hand not all hand held devices have passed the same tests as the Nomad.

NOMAD redefines intraoral x-rays

From Dental Products Report:

Q: Talk about how NOMAD is changing the way dentists are taking intraoral X-rays.

A: The reality is, intraoral X-ray really hasn’t changed much in decades. The NOMAD brought about the first true change in the way dental professionals take X-rays. How many homes do you walk into and see a corded phone on the wall anymore? The same holds true in the dental practice.

Why hang a wall-mounted X-ray? Times have changed. NOMAD delivers benefits that wall mounts can’t. With close to 14,000 NOMADs in use worldwide, dental practices are finding the NOMAD is offering them the best workflow design, most flexibility, and best investment possible. No more arm drift or pass-throughs— this is the modern way to take X-rays efficiently.

Run and hide no more

Following is a link to an article I wrote for RDH Magazine on Hand Held X-Rays.

We’ve had X-ray safety protocol drilled into us since day one, and staying in the room and holding the thing is a huge no-no. We need to run from the room, preferably behind several walls and layers of lead, before we dare fire the tube head lest terrible horrors befall us.”

That type of caution was certainly appropriate when Roentgen zapped the first molar in 1895, with what I believe was a 20-second exposure. However, today’s amazing 21st century materials and equipment do in fact make it possible to stay in the room and hold the X-ray device.

Radiation safety is important, and Aribex takes it very seriously. The NOMAD is made in the USA, has FDA approval and has been studied meticulously to insure it is safe. Links to the actual studies can be found at the NOMAD website.

Which is better, an old wall mounted phone with a cord or a cordless cell phone that you can use anywhere? If you are building or remodeling your dental office the only option you should consider for X-Rays is the Nomad. It will cost less and deliver more.

Hand Held for Hygeine

Dental hygienists take most of the radiographs in a typical dental office and they experience the frustrations of taking x-rays on a daily basis. Fortunately there is an amazing new technology that eliminates many of the hassles and frustrations of taking radiographs in the traditional manner. The Nomad from Aribex is a handheld x-ray machine that allows you to stay in the room while you are exposing the image.

The ability to stay in the room while you take the image and better yet hold the tube eliminates most of the problems we encounter when taking an x-ray. How about that over-extended or out-of-adjustment arm that slowly slides south whenever you place it on the upper left? Or the arm that just doesn’t allow you to place the cone exactly parallel so you have the patient slump down, twist the chair and turn their head just so. No problem when you hold the cone.

Then there is the patient who just can’t keep the film or sensor where you placed it. As soon as you turn away they swallow or shift their bite and your perfectly positioned sensor is no longer perfect. When you are standing next to the patient you can see if the sensor moves and fix it.

Finally there are elderly or special needs patients who have limited mobility or may be confined to a wheelchair. With Nomad you do not need to drag them to the treatment room and maneuver them into the dental chair you can take an x-ray image anywhere. In fact as the ultimate benefit of mobility you can use Nomad in a nursing home or mobile clinic or on a humanitarian mission.

Nomad is an MDEA Finalist

The Nomad Pro handheld x-ray system has been selected as a finalist in the 2012 Medical Design Excellence Awards competition. The MDEA is the medical device industry’s premier design awards competition and is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. The winners will be announced on May 23, 2012.

From the MDEA Website:

2012 FINALIST: NOMAD Pro handheld x-ray system, manufactured by Aribex Inc. (Orem, UT). Entry submitted by IQMS (Paso Robles, CA). NOMAD Pro is an advanced, handheld intraoral x-ray for dental professionals that can easily be used in or out of an office setting. Lightweight and rechargeable, NOMAD Pro helps provide underserved patients access to care in remote humanitarian programs. Supply and design credit to Voltage Multipliers Inc. (Visalia, CA), and Ecomass Technologies (Austin, TX).

I have been a big fan of the Nomad for years. Sadly there are still a handful of states that have yet to approve the Nomad for general use. Maybe this recognition along with support from local dentists will help convince reluctant regulators that Nomad is safe and provides a service far beyond old wall mounted units.
